Master Thesis in Interaction Design
Evaluation and Development of Innovation Support Model
This master's thesis was conducted at the PDU Microwave Department at Ericsson, in collaboration with the department of applied IT at Chalmers University of Technology

Problem definition
The main challenge at Ericsson is not generating ideas, but effectively managing and developing them. Although brainstorming is a widely used method, turning ideas into meaningful outcomes requires structured approaches and well-defined processes to ensure consistency and success.
This thesis focuses on enhancing a specific part of Ericsson’s innovation process: the Accelerator. The Accelerator helps teams transform pitched ideas into presentable concepts for potential investors through an activity known as Accelebration. Once an idea is accepted, the team has ten working days to develop and conceptualize it.
To ensure successful outcomes, Ericsson has adopted the Human-Centered Design (HCD) approach. HCD relies on Design Thinking, a framework that balances three core constraints (Brown, 2009):
-
Feasible – Is it technically possible?
-
Desirable – Is it valuable to the customer?
-
Viable – Is it profitable and aligned with the business?
Research question
How to create a process flow, guidelines and a methods toolbox for the innovation coach that will enable innovation team members with little to no experience in design thinking to conceptualize ideas that will be qualified to advance towards the development process?
